This week, I was at the Capitol Building, the place where insurrectionists tried to kill me and my fellow officers on January 6, 2021. While I was leaving the Capitol, one of those same insurrectionists approached me and tried to confront me. I stood my ground. Watch it below:
To all those who have since applauded me and acknowledged my "restraint" during that interaction with the terrorist earlier this week, thank you.
However, isn't that what we want our police officers to show? Restraint? In the face of a moment where someone might deserve the full fury of one scorned? It was challenging to say the least. But we should expect that from the law enforcement officers who swore an oath to protect and SERVE!
As an officer, I served as a hostage negotiator, a crisis intervention officer and a field training officer (FTO). We need to continue to make sure we are putting the best officers in our communities and also putting them in the best positions to be successful.
Arming them with not just weapons but training, de-escalation techniques, empathy and education. I look forward to working with the newly elected leaders of the Democratic Party to show that indeed Democrats support law enforcement but that support comes with an understanding that "bad" police officers need to be held accountable and not shielded. Supporting first responders shouldn't be a partisan issue.
However Republicans have spit in my face over the last 4 years. And when they do, like that insurrectionist tried to, I do the same thing over and over again–I stand my ground.
Will you stand with me?
Harry
